Fourth novel · Fantasy · In writing
Blood Rush
Renée has been starving for weeks. Two hundred and one years old, hunted, hiding in the sewers of a city that no longer hides anything from her, she takes one drunk too far and has to let the rats clean up after her. The old truce between immortals and hunters is long dead, her safehouses are gone and most of her friends are ash — so she knocks on the door of Claude, five hundred years old, unreasonably strong, and still holding a grudge from thirty years ago.
"Everyone is hungry. Nobody says so."
A fantasy in progress — first draft under way
The pitch
A departure, on purpose
After three contemporary novels, this one steps sideways into fantasy — vampires, werewolves, fae and elves, each keeping to their own corner of a war none of them can win alone.
The voice stays the same: close, unguarded, funny where it can afford to be. Immortality here is not glamour. It is centuries of appetite, debt and unfinished arguments, and what it does to someone who has run out of places to sleep.
The cast
Who is awake
Spoiler-free introductions — who they are when the book opens.
- R
Renée
Two hundred and one years old
Hunted, starving and living in the sewers of a city that has stopped hiding anything from her. She has outlasted almost everyone she loved, and the hunger is beginning to make her decisions for her.
- C
Claude
Five hundred years old
Unreasonably strong, comfortably settled, and still holding a grudge from thirty years ago. The last door Renée wants to knock on, and the only one left.
- T
The old truce
Immortals and hunters
A peace that held for generations and then didn't. What replaced it is not war exactly — it is everyone deciding, separately, that the others should go first.
The story so far
Where the draft has reached
- 01
One drunk too far
Weeks of hunger end badly. Renée takes more than she meant to and has to let the rats finish what she started.
- 02
No safehouses left
The addresses she trusted are burned, watched or empty. Most of her friends are ash and the rest are not answering.
- 03
Knocking on Claude's door
Thirty years of silence and one very old grievance, set aside because the alternative is starving in a sewer.
- 04
Four courts, one war
Vampires, werewolves, fae and elves, each keeping to their corner — and each discovering that the corner is not defensible alone.
